The word “betting” sounds so much nicer than “gambling,” doesn’t it? To gamble suggests the distinct possibility of losing — an outcome of what used to be a vice and now has been promoted as a pastime. So we like the word “betting” more than the alternatives. It used to be that people could enjoy a restaurant without a liquor license. It used to be that viewers could enjoy a sports broadcast without hearing about the point spread. The NAB code was actually a thing. I’m no prude about gambling casinos while on vacation, but inviting another vice into one’s televiewing is just sad. Broadcasters see revenue and so the world becomes a little more tawdry.
