As-yet-untitled drama would star Kate Walsh’s Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shephard and could be picked up in time for upfront presentations, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.
In an uncommon move in today’s risk-averse TV industry, ABC is developing a spin-off to its hit series, Grey’s Anatomy, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.
Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes has agreed to write a special two-hour episode that will serve as a pilot for the new series, and the pilot will likely air in May, leaving ABC time to decide whether to pick up the show in time for its upfront presentations to advertisers.
The story, written by Brooks Barnes, notes that spin-offs have become somewhat rare, given the shortage of smash-hit TV shows that make it possible to carve out one character and build a show around them. Ms. Rhimes has commented, however, that Grey’s has so many popular characters that it is hard to fit them all into storylines.
