WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Syndies Stave Off Some NCAA Competition

Shows in all genres of first-run showed some life despite interruptions from basketball and weather coverage in the week ending March 25. Wendy Williams returned to host her show after being away for three weeks due to illness, and the strip surged 27% to a 1.4, tying an unchanged Maury.

Syndication was able to bounce back in the ratings despite going up against the Sweet 16 round of March Madness, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, which caused numerous preemption for shows cleared on CBS affiliates in the session ending March 25.

Judge Judy, for example, did not get to air its primary run on one or more days in many of the country’s larger markets, including New York and Los Angeles, due to basketball and storm coverage.

However, even with the sharply reduced footprint, Judy was still the dominant show in syndication and the highest rated program overall for the fifth consecutive week, clocking a strong 6.7 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, up 3% from the prior week and up 8% from last year.

Elsewhere, most of the top six talkers were on the upswing. Dr. Phil, which has been first in talk for 81 straight weeks (with just one tie), jumped 7% to a 3.0, and widened its lead in the category, even though the show was in reruns on three of the five days.

Live with Kelly and Ryan took second, holding steady at a 2.3 and improving 5% from last year.

Ellen DeGeneres advanced 5% for both the week and the year to a third-place 2.2, finishing behind Kelly and Ryan for the third week in a row.
