News-Press & Gazette exercises option to acquire KECY Yuma and KDFX-CA Palm Springs from Pacific Media. It had been operating the Fox affiliates under an LMA for the past decade.
For the past 10 years, the News-Press & Gazette Co. has been running the Fox affiliates in Yuma, Ariz.-El Centro, Calif. (DMA 165) and Palm Springs, Calif. (DMA 141), KECY and KDFX-CA, respectively, under a local marketing agreement with an option to buy.
But with the clock running out on the option, News-Press today bought the stations from Pacific Media Corp. for $2 million following FCC approval of the deal.
Since Jan. 1, 2007, KECY has doubled as Yuma-El Centro’s ABC affiliate. It carries the network on a digital channel.
News-Press also owns a low-power stations in the market—Telemundo affiliate KESE-LP.
KDFX-CA is part of a cluster of stations that News-Press operates in Palm Springs. In addition to KDFX-CA, it owns KESQ, a full-power ABC affiliate; KUNA-LP, a Fox affiliate and KCWQ-LP, a CW affiliate.
Pacific Media is owned by Robinson O. Everett, who holds an interest in Gocom Media, licensee of WCCU/WRSP, the Fox affiliate in Campaign-Springfield-Decatur, Ill.
