It was the only show in first-run syndication to post a ratings gain in the session ending June 16. Preemptions and competition from sports resulted in flat or down numbers for the rest, with many posting season- and series-lows.
Jeopardy’s national ratings slipped 15% to a live-plus-same-day 5.8 in its first full week following the shocking upset of trivia titan James Holzhauer, and, for the first time in 11 weeks, failed to win syndication’s game show race.
Family Feud, which was the only show in the top three to hold its own, posted an unchanged 6.1 and took top honors in the session ending June 16 with Jeopardy coming in a close second while Wheel of Fortune skidded 9% to a new season low 5.2 in third.
To be fair, it was an extremely tough ratings week all around due to massive preemptions and strong competition from the Women’s World Cup, the NBA Championship and the NHL Stanley Cup finals. In addition, coverage of a June 10 helicopter crash Manhattan blacked out a number of daytime shows in top market New York.
For example, the only top-tier show on the entire chart to increase from the week before was courtroom heavy-hitter Hot Bench, which jumped 5% to a 2.2 and ranked as the third highest daytime show behind only the season’s runaway household ratings champ Judge Judy at a 5.4 and top talker Dr. Phil at a 2.3.
Speaking of talk, nothing went up. Phil, which dipped 4% with reruns on all five days, was the genre leader for the 145th straight week. Live with Kelly and Ryan gave back 5% to a 2.0, but snared second place for the 16th consecutive week. Ellen DeGeneres declined 5% to a third-place 1.8.
Week two of the three-week tryout for the RuPaul chat fest averaged a weighted 0.5 rating/1 share in seven metered markets, down 17% from its lead-in, but even with its year-ago time periods. Among women 25-54, it was down 33% from both lead-ins and June 2018 time periods to a 0.2/1 in the key demo.
On the positive side, magazines were relatively stable despite being hard hit by the much-anticipated sporting events. Inside Edition led the group, but fell 4% to a 2.6, with Entertainment Tonight next at a steady 2.5. Access held its ground at a 1.1 and moved up to third place ahead of TMZ, which dropped 25% to a new season low 0.9.
Also at the 0.9 level, Extra and Daily Mail TV were both able to hang tough, tying TMZ for fourth place in the category.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Dr. Phil (0.9, unchanged from the week before)
- Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.8, -20%)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.7, -13%), tied with Maury (0.7, unchanged)
- Steve Wilkos (0.5, unchanged)
