WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Soccer Again Takes Its Toll On Syndies

A third week of preemptions and competition from the increasingly popular Women’s World Cup meant few week-to-week gains in the session ending June 30. Inside Edition was one exception.

The first week of summer — the session ending June 30 — was a challenging one for syndication, marked by widespread reruns and a third week of preemptions from the increasingly popular Women’s World Cup. Not surprisingly, most shows were unable to gain from the week before.

One of the few top-tier programs to advance was Inside Edition, which inched up 4% to a 2.7 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, and edged corporate sibling Entertainment Tonight’s unchanged 2.5.

The other big magazines did well, considering the depleted summer PUT levels and the strong competition. Access held its ground at a 1.1, tying TMZ, while Daily Mail TV stood fast at a 0.9, tying Extra. Also of note, Extra made a big move in the advertiser-coveted women 25-54 age group, jumping 25%.

In other closely watched genres, the newcomer Chicago P.D., the only hour-long scripted strip in syndication, was one of the hotter performers, shooting up 13% to a 0.9.

Turning to daytime, season-to-date household ratings champ Judge Judy presided over the court shows for the 1,188th consecutive week with a 5.9, despite being partially in repeats and heavily preempted by soccer.

Dr. Phil was completely in reruns and eased 4% to a 2.3 but still led the talkers for the 147th week in a row.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Live with Kelly and Ryan went on hiatus and slipped 10% to a 1.9, airing a combination of taped and repackaged episodes, but finished ahead of Ellen DeGeneres for the 18th straight week. Ellen was off 6% to a 1.6.

Ratings improvements were also hard to come by in the game show race. Overall leader Family Feud came in first for the third week in a row even though it dipped 3% to a 6.1. Jeopardy, in its third full week following the loss of star contestant James Holzhauer, fell 2% to a 5.6, while Wheel of Fortune skidded 5% to a 5.2.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (0.9, unchanged from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.8, -11%)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (0.7, unchanged), tied with Maury (0.7, unchanged)
  • Steve Wilkos (0.5, unchanged)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
