Mags Make A Move Out Of Summer Doldrums
The big traditional entertainment magazines generated the ratings steam in an otherwise tepid late-season syndication session ending Aug. 25.
Despite suffering the double whammy of pre-season football preemptions and anemic People Using Television levels, Entertainment Tonight rose 4% from the prior frame to a 2.4 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating; Access improved 10% for both the week and the year to a 1.1 while surging 25% among women 25-54; and Extra shot up 11% to a nine-week high 1.0, while also barreling ahead 25% in the key demo.
In addition, sophomore Daily Mail TV, already renewed for a third year, had the largest annual increase of all magazines with growth of 13% to a steady 0.9.
Meanwhile, Inside Edition, the magazine frontrunner of the week, was unchanged at a 2.5.
The No. 1 show of the season, Judge Judy, topped the entire chart for the sixth time in seven weeks, strengthening 3% to a four-week high 6.1 even though it was completely in reruns.
Another courtroom moving up was Hot Bench, which had no objection to a 5% spike to a nine-week high 2.1.
Elsewhere, Dr. Phil, still in repeats on all five days, held its ground at a 2.0 and continued to operate at the top of the talkers for a notable 155 straight weeks.
Also worthy of mention in talk, the steady national numbers for the second week of the three-week Jerry O’ trial run airing on the Fox O&Os in Wendy Williams’ time periods were part of a combined 0.9 rating with Wendy repeats.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Dr. Phil (0.8, unchanged from the week before), tied with Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.8, unchanged)
- Maury (0.7, unchanged)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.6, +20%), tied with Steve Wilkos (0.6, +20%)
