New Year Sees Syndies Start Strong

In the week ending Jan. 12 more than a dozen first-run shows posted weekly rating gains in the double digits, including Dr. Phil, which rose 42% to reclaim first place among the talk shows.

Dr. Phil convincingly returned to the top of the talkers after two second-place finishes with a dramatic 42% surge from the prior week to a new season-high 2.7 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating in the session ending Jan. 12.

That marked the good doctor’s strongest performance since the week of May 20, 2019, and its 172nd victory in the past 175 weeks.

Live with Kelly and Ryan was next in line with a steady 2.1, followed by Ellen DeGeneres, which like Phil returned to original programming after two weeks of repeats and rose 25% to a 2.0.

Of course, nothing in the daypart could challenge daytime-leader-by-a-mile Judge Judy, which jumped 23% to a 6.9 and outperformed the ratings of all three top talkers combined. The hefty score was Judy’s highest since late November.

The Kelly Clarkson Show led the season’s newcomers for the 18th week in arrow, holding its ground at a 1.3 in households and leaping 20% in the coveted women 25-54 demo despite being hurt by coverage of the president’s Jan. 8 remarks on Iran’s missile strike on U.S. bases in Iraq.

Tamron Hall, another very successful rookie talker, which like Clarkson has already been renewed for year two, raced ahead 11% to a 1.0, equaling its season high. In the key demo Hall held all of its 67% prior week’s increase.

Elsewhere, the big entertainment magazines were all steady to sharply higher following the Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 5. Entertainment Tonight took over sole possession of first place among magazines with a 20% spike to new season-high 3.0, landing just ahead of sister show Inside Edition.

Access Hollywood, which soared 27% in the prior frame, climbed another 7% to a 1.5, matching its highest rating of the season.

Access also grew 33% among women 25-54; TMZ perked up 22% to 1.1; and Extra came up big, shooting up 25% in the key women 25-54 demo and advancing 11% in households to a 1.0. That tied its season high after a 22% single-day ratings spike on Jan. 6 for its Globes coverage.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.1, +57% from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.9, -10%), tied with Ellen DeGeneres (0.9, +29%)
  • Kelly Clarkson (0.6, +20%), tied with Maury (0.6, unchanged) and Wendy Williams (0.6, +50%)
  • Tamron Hall (0.5, unchanged), tied with Steve Wilkos (0.5, unchanged)
