Rookie ‘Kelly Clarkson’ Keeps Climbing
Kelly Clarkson, already the No. 1 new show of the season, scored its highest ratings since the week of Dec. 16 and put even more distance between it and every other rookie in the session ending Jan. 26.
Despite the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 20, and tons of preemptions for President Trump’s impeachment hearings, which wiped out programming in many markets for the rest of the week, Clarkson climbed 8% from the prior frame to a first-place five-week high 1.4 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, and surged 17% among women 25-54 to its highest demo score since the week of Sept. 30.
Tamron Hall, which like Clarkson, has been renewed for a second season, ran into breakouts on three of the five days and gave back 9% to a 1.0 after hitting a new season-high in the previous round.
The third talk newcomer, Mel Robbins, which reportedly will end production in the spring, dropped 20% to a 0.4.
Among the veteran talkers, Live with Kelly and Ryan rolled into first place with a 5% jump to a 2.1. That tied Ellen DeGeneres, which grew 11% to a 2.1.
Perennial talk leader Dr. Phil was preempted in a number of markets on four of the five days and still just missed the lead even though it pulled back 23% to a 2.0.
Judge Judy, which usually buries everything in sight, also suffered massive preemptions and backtracked 16% to a 5.7, although that was nearly triple anything else in daytime.
Meanwhile, Judy’s creation Hot Bench, barreled ahead 5% to a five-week-high 2.1, tying Live and Ellen as the second-highest daytime shows after only Judge Judy.
In access, Entertainment Tonight dipped 3% to a 2.8, but led the magazines for the third week in a row.
Extra and TMZ did well to hold their ground at 0.9 and 1.1, respectively, while three of the other five shows in the top six declined by double digits.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Dr. Phil (0.9, -18% from the week before), tied with Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.9, unchanged) and Ellen DeGeneres (0.9, +13%)
- Kelly Clarkson (0.7, +17%)
- Maury (0.6, unchanged), tied with Wendy Williams (06, -14%)
- Steve Wilkos (0.5, unchanged)
