Pandemic Viewing Pushes Syndie Viewing
Breaking news coverage of the coronavirus pandemic ignited the big entertainment magazines for a second straight week in the session ending March 22.
Among the top performers, Extra, which skyrocketed 22% in the prior frame, again put pedal to the metal and surged an additional 9% for a two-week increase of 33% and a new season high 1.2 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen, the strip’s biggest rating since 2018.
The No. 1 magazine overall for the 10th time in 11 weeks was Entertainment Tonight, which grew 10% to a new season high 3.3.
The biggest percentage gainers were TMZ, which spurted 17% to new season best 1.4, and Daily Mail TV, which delivered a 13 improvement to a 13-week high 0.9.
In daytime, Dr. Phil was the talk show leader for the 181st time in the past 185 weeks, forging ahead to a 2.4.
Live with Kelly and Ryan snared second place with a 10% leap to a 2.2, tying its season high.
Next in line among the top-tier talkers were:
- Ellen DeGeneres, unchanged at a 1.8.
- Rookie ratings champ Kelly Clarkson, which belted out an 8% increase to an eight-week high 1.4 despite airing a heavy dose of repeats and numerous preemptions for virus updates.
- Veteran Oz at a 1.2.
Court shows were also hot with the Judge Judy juggernaut jumping 12% to a three-week high 6.6 and crushing the category for the 1,226th week in a row.
Hot Bench was the second-highest gaveler with a 16% spike to a 2.2, matching its season high.
Meanwhile, the top performing newcomer among the legal shows, Judge Jerry, climbed 13% to a 0.9 in households and rose 33% in the key women 25-54 demo despite being in reruns all week.

- Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.1, +38% from the week before)
- Dr. Phil (1.0, +25%)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.9, +13%)
- Kelly Clarkson (0.6, unchanged), tied with Maury (0.6, unchanged)
- Tamron Hall (0.5, +25%), tied with Wendy Williams (0.5, -17%), Steve Wilkos (0.5, +25%) and Dr. Oz (0.5, +25%)
