‘Judge Judy’ Hangs Tough In Holiday Week
Not surprisingly, ratings largely declined as syndicated shows were stalled by a torrent of preemptions for coverage of the George Floyd protests and the coronavirus pandemic in the traditionally lightly viewed Memorial Day holiday week ending May 31.
For example, all of the top four talkers were hit by losses from the prior frame. Dr. Phil gave back 13% to a 2.0 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating after going into repeats on four of the five days, but was the highest-rated talk show for the third week in a row and the 184th time in the past 195 weeks.
Live with Kelly and Ryan was right behind, battling to a second-place 1.9 although dipping 5%.
Ellen DeGeneres dropped 7% to a new season low 1.4, and Maury was down 8% to a 1.1.
Further back, Rachel Ray remained at a 1.0, Steve Wilkos weakened 10% to a 0.9 and Wendy Williams fell 11% to a new season low 0.8 with encore episodes.
On the other hand, the top gavelers were quite formidable. Court show champion Judge Judy dipped just 2% to a still-hefty 5.8 and extended its winning streak in the category to 1,236 weeks.
Judy’s creation Hot Bench was in reruns all week and eased 5% to a 2.0 but that tied Dr. Phil as the second highest daytime show behind only Judge Judy.
In access, TMZ at a 1.0, and Daily Mail TV, which tied Extra at a 0.8, were the only magazines to buck the down trend and hold their own with ratings on par with the prior frame.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.8, -11% from the week before)
- Dr. Phil (0.7, -13%)
- Maury (0.6, -14%)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.5, -17%)
