RTW — Booth N 3123
The new Loudness Family, with its SurroundControl, SurroundMonitor, and DigitalMonitor, now includes an integrated loudness display conforming to the ITU BS.1771 guideline as a standard feature. With this lineup, RTW now offers easy-to-use solutions for monitoring the loudness of stereo, multichannel, and surround signals in a wide range of applications, as a complement or an alternative to conventional peak meters. This feature can be activated quickly and easily via suitably programmed presets.
BLITS Channel Identification for 5.1 Surround
The SurroundControl 31900/31960 and SurroundMonitor 11900 support the BLITS (Black’s & Lane’s Ident Tones for Surround) method for easy and safe channel identification of 5.1 surround signals. These comprehensive tools help prevent unintentional channel swapping. On top of analyzing incoming BLITS clusters, the units also incorporate a flexible internal signal generator that sends out signal clusters in BLITS format on the digital as well as analogue outputs. An additional feature is the option to add an audio file intro (WAV format) that can be prepended to the BLITS sequence. Such a WAV file could contain a station identification signal or other ID information.
RTW has completely overhauled its SurroundControl range, including the only eight-channel systems for professional production, post-production, and broadcast that control, monitor, and analyze surround sound utilizing RTW’s unique Surround Sound Analyzer. Developed by RTW, the Surround Sound Analyzer is the “house”-shaped display known throughout the industry because of its ingeniously easy-to-read visual manifestation of overall sound, including loudness and sound pressure level, phase correlation, and level differences among channels.
The SurroundControl 31900 is designed for audio studios and fits in a 19-inch, 1-RU case, while the SurroundControl 31960 is sized as a half 19-inch, 3-RU rack-mountable module for use with standard 19-inch installation racks for waveform monitors in video studios.
An eight-channel measuring system featuring the Surround Sound Analyzer, the SurroundMonitor 11900 is a universal system for analyzing both digital and analog multichannel and 3.1, 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 surround sound. Key features include an ITU BS.1771-compliant loudness display with data logging and chart recording, as well as an integrated BLITS generator and advanced analyzer for easy identification of individual surround channels.
SDI Interface and Dolby E / Dolby AC-3 Decoder
The SurroundControl 31900/31960, as well as the SurroundMonitor 11900, can be equipped with an HD- and SD-capable SDI de-embedder interface, as well as an integrated Dolby E and Dolby AC-3 decoder. The SDI interface can access all 16 (4 x 4) audio channels implemented in SDI streams and use them for both visual display and audio monitoring. Last year, RTW joined the Dolby E Partner family, and now all standard and SDI versions of SurroundControl 31900/31960 and SurroundMonitor 11900 are available with a Dolby E and Dolby AC-3 decoder option, giving direct access to coded data streams for analysis and control without the need for external decoding. Like the standard SurroundControl 31900/31960, the extended versions feature a full-blown eight-channel surround monitoring controller with a downmix matrix, as well as the Surround Sound Analyzer.
RTW DigitalMonitor 10500X-PLUS now incorporates ITU-compliant loudness display and full-screen mode. The RTW DigitalMonitor 10500X-PLUS, a high-performance, cost-effective display system for monitoring digital stereo audio signals, now comes with an integrated loudness display in compliance with the ITU BS.1771 guideline. Further enhancements include a new full-screen mode for enlarged display showing the individual instruments in use. All current-production DigitalMonitor 10500X-PLUS systems leave the factory with the new loudness display options included.
The RTW SurroundMonitor 10600-PLUS, a high-performance, budget-friendly display system for monitoring digital stereo, multichannel, and surround audio signals, now incorporates an integrated loudness display according to the ITU BS.1771 guideline. Further improvements include a new full-screen mode for enlarged display showing individual instruments used, as well as detail enhancements within the featured Surround Sound Analyzer. All current-production SurroundMonitor 10600 systems now leave the factory with the new display options. The PLUS option includes the power supply and a table stand.
Surround Sound Analyzer
The Surround Sound Analyzer is an integral part of all surround-enabled visualization systems by RTW. This system has been licensed to Tektronix and been implemented in two of the company’s products: the Waveform Monitor (since 2004) and the AMM-768 (since 2007). The Surround Sound Analyzer, also known as “house display” due to its unique shape, shows the user all relevant information in an easy-to-understand manner. This incorporates custom-calibrated SPL and loudness measuring, correlation, and phase relations including any polarity errors, as well as the position and width of phantom sound sources between the single channels. The dynamic behavior of the individual meters tracks the listener’s individual acoustic experience and displays the perceived balance of a surround program at a glance. The center channel is highlighted in a different color and integrates seamlessly into the view, providing a clear and continuous view of the balance between the front-side phantom source coming from the left, right, and center channels. In addition, the Surround Sound Analyzer’s signal visualization is based on either the SPL (A weighted) or the ITU loudness of the individual channels.
