It will use News Over Wireless’ platform to deliver news and video from its TV stations to mobile users and develop custom iPhone applications for local news, sports, entertainment, video, weather and traffic.
The deal is part of LIN’s “accelerating” mobile strategy, said Robb Richter, senior vice president, new media, in a prepared statement. “NOW’s customized mobile news platform will help further extend our newsroom, increase brand loyalty and grow additional revenue streams.”
Richter said that LIN also plans to make use of NOW’s proprietary iPhone app for distributing local TV news along with national and local advertising on the popular smart phone.
“LIN TV’s new media strategy is to deliver the greatest media experience to viewers in our local markets through Web, mobile, short message service and other channels,” he said. “The iPhone applications tap into one of the most popular Apple innovations to provide LIN TV’s personalized, multi-media news to a growing mobile audience.”
The iPhone app for LIN TV’s markets will be available free of charge in the Apple App Store.
NOW is a unit of Capitol Broadcasting, a TV station group that includes WRAL Raleigh, N.C.
