The group’s former new media director is promoted to oversee operations of the company’s nine TV stations, 12 radio stations, Internet and new media operations and the monthly Madison Magazine.
Brian Burns, director of new media, Madison, Wis.-based Morgan Murphy Media, has been named vice president and chief operating officer of the company.
In his new role, Burns will oversee the day-to-day operations of the company’s nine TV stations, 12 radio stations, Internet and new media operations and the monthly Madison Magazine.
As the director of new media, he led the effort to grow Internet audience at all Morgan Murphy properties. In addition to building traffic on traditional Web sites, Burns was responsible for implementing mobile media strategies at each location.
“Brian will be the fourth generation of our family to be in the business” said Elizabeth Murphy Burns, the company’s president and chief executive officer, “and my brother John and I are confident that Brian will not only meet, but also exceed the family’s goal to continue in the business of communication, information and entertainment. I look forward to working with Brian in his new role as we face the challenges impacting our industry.”
Brian started his broadcasting career at KDLH Duluth, Minn., where he was a member of — and later became manager of — its production department. He then moved to Madison’s WISC, where he directed the station’s 5 and 10 p.m. newscasts. He has also worked for Fox Sports North, where he directed college hockey broadcasts.
Burns has a Bachelor of Arts degree with a business emphasis from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is also a graduate of the Broadcast Leadership Training Program sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters Foundation and is a board member of the Open Mobile Video Coalition.
