Nexstar has named the veteran broadcaster VP and general manager of KUTV (CBS) and KUSG (Ind.) He’ll report to Brian Jones, co-COO of Nexstar, which manages the stations under the terms of a management agreement with the owner, Four Points Media Group.
Nexstar Broadcasting Group is appointing Steve Carlston to head the duopoly it manages in Salt Lake City, CBS affiliate KUTV and independent KUSG.
Carlston will start Oct. 26 with the title of VP and general manager.
Carlston will report to Brian Jones, Co-COO of Nexstar, which manages the stations under the terms of a management agreement with the owner, Four Points Media Group, LLC.
Carlston served as managing partner of Las Vegas TV Partners, which has owned low-power KTUD in Las Vegas since 2004.
Prior to that, he was EVP for the UPN Network overseeing network distribution, affiliate relations and marketing, and also was president and COO of SF Broadcasting, overseeing four FOX affiliates in Honolulu; New Orleans; Mobile, Ala.; and Green Bay, Wis.
From 1992 to 1997, Carlston was VP and GM of KSTU, the Fox station in Salt Lake City.
During that time, he expanded local news from three hours to more than sixteen hours per week. In addition, he and his team were the recipients of the Edward R. Murrow award for Best Newscast.
Early in his career, Carlston held a variety of sales positions with Katz, WTAE Pittsburgh, and Buena Vista Television.
He is a 1980 Graduate of Brigham Young University with a BA in broadcast management.
