Media General’s WJBF, the ABC affiliate in the Georgia market, will begin managing Schurz’s NBC affiliate, WAGT, starting in January. “[I]t has become clear that the current economic conditions will only make it increasingly difficult to operate as we have in the past,” said Schurz’s Senior Vice President Marci Burdick.
Media General and Schurz Communications are merging the operation of their stations in Augusta, Ga. (DMA 114), under the management of Media General starting next January, the station group announced today.
Under joint sales and shared services agreements, Media General’s ABC affiliate WJBF will manage Schurz’s NBC affiliate, WAGT.
“We are very proud of the staff and management of WAGT and their commitment to their community,” Marci Burdick, senior vice president for Schurz Communications Inc. said. “But it has become clear that the current economic conditions will only make it increasingly difficult to operate as we have in the past.
“There has been a mutual trust and respect between our two companies for many years. We believe the new agreement allows the best of both companies to be leveraged for the benefit of viewers and advertisers.”
Bill Stewart, vice president and general manager of WJBF, said Media General is “honored” to assume the management of WAGT.
“We look forward to the continued growth and success of WJBF and WAGT as we work together to serve our local communities with news, weather, sports, programming and community projects,” he said, adding, “this agreement will benefit local viewers and advertisers of both of our stations and associated Web sites.”
