Screen Time Classics, a film-distribution label and post-production company specializing in restoration of classic film titles and television shows for presentation in HD, has opened its doors in Schaumburg, Ill. Screen Time Classics is the work of Jim McClain and Sean McKee, respectively owners of b|media, an interactive multimedia, video and original content studio, and Screen Time Images, a company specializing in film restoration.
At the heart of the 30,000-square-foot facility is da Vinci’s new Resolve FX digital mastering suite, selected to handle the restoration and mastering needs for high-resolution digital scans of films and television shows.
The company says its mission is “to develop the future of family entertainment, providing movie and television content to consumers via HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, as well as HD satellite/cable networks with emerging streaming technologies.” Released DVDs will contain trailers, interviews, photos, trivia and interactive content, taking full advantage of the new HD consumer formats. In addition to restoration services and content distribution, Screen Time Classics plans to provide creative color facilities for original content and new projects being developed by the partners.
“We are dedicated to providing the highest-quality results and making the great works of film and television available to today’s audiences, as they were meant to be seen with their original clarity and vividness,†said McKee. “By bringing the expertise of these two companies under one roof, we can offer clients a unique synergy of restoration services, with streamlined workflow, and the most advanced mastering capabilities available.”
At the center of the company’s workflow is da Vinci’s Resolve FX digital mastering suite, which provides non-linear image enhancement and 4K resolution capabilities along with creative color tools enhanced far beyond previous-generation systems. Resolve also gives colorists at Screen Time Classics the familiar interface of a traditional telecine suite. With the Resolve system, calibrated, high-resolution 4K scans are converted into digital files and transferred onto disk. Processing is then done in a shared digital environment with da Vinci tools, including Revival restoration, minimizing the handling of fragile film elements by multiple workstations.
Screen Time Classics says it is one of the only independent labels fully equipped to develop product in-house, drawing from the combined services offered by parent companies b|media and Screen Time Images, such as HD, 2K, and 4K telecine scanning with LiquiDefinition wet gate, restoration, audio, DVD/HD-DVD authoring, motion graphics and package design, Web site/interactive multimedia, as well as licensing and acquisitions.
