‘Dr. Phil’ Tops In Talk In February Sweep

The good doctor scored his biggest February numbers in seven years. Others with a strong month included Live with Kelly & Michael, Wendy Williams (up 19% from last February), most of the first-run rookies (up from their premiere weeks), several entertainment mags and three game shows.

The February sweep (Jan. 28-Feb. 25) is over and the closely watched talk show race was won handily by Dr. Phil. Live with Kelly & Michael finished a strong second in the national results.

Phil won its 10th major sweep in a row and scored its biggest February numbers in seven years, averaging a 3.6 live-plus-same-day Nielsen rating, up 3% from last year. Among women 25-54, Phil also led the field with a 1.8 demo rating.

Kelly & Michael also came up big, clocking its best February since 2007 with a 3.3, growing 6% in households.

Third-place Ellen DeGeneres was off 6% to a 3.0 average.

Among the other talkers:

  • Wendy Williams had the largest year-to-year increase in the genre, jumping 19% to a sixth-place 1.9 sweep average.
  • Dr. Oz had the largest decline in the category, tumbling 35% to a 1.5.

Elsewhere, most of the newcomers to first run showed sharp gains compared to their September debut weeks.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

  • Hot Bench was tops in households and had the most growth of any rookie, shooting up 38% from its opener to a 1.8 average.
  • Celebrity Name Game advanced 27% to a 1.4.
  • The Real rose 30% to a third place 1.3, but led the freshmen class among women 25-54 with a 1.0 average in the demo.
  • Meredith Vieira dipped 8% from its heavily promoted premier week to a 1.2, but nevertheless held steady in the key demo and has been renewed for year two along with all the other rookies.
  • Further back, Judge Faith climbed 14% to a 0.8 in households.

In access, Entertainment Tonight ruled the magazines for the 97th consecutive sweep, improving 5% to a 3.9 average.

Meanwhile, at the end of the sweep, ratings for all of the traditional entertainment mags surged with next-day coverage of the 87th annual Academy Awards:

  • ET jumped 15% from the prior week to a 4.5.
  • Access Hollywood added 5% to a 2.0.
  • Extra soared 19% to a 1.9.
  • The Insider leaped 31% to a 1.7.

Among game shows, Family Feud was easily up the most with a 17% increase to a third-place 6.8 average. Wheel of Fortune was tops in the group with a 3% rise to a 7.6, followed by Jeopardy, which added 6% to a 7.4. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire trailed with a 1.9, down 14% from last February.

Turning to metered market ratings, Rachael Ray had a huge sweep in top DMA New York, growing 50% from last year and easily winning its time slot with the show’s strongest February rating in six years.

The sweep’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.8, -10% from February 2014)
  • Live with Kelly & Michael (1.7, +6%)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.6, -16%)
  • Maury (1.4, unchanged), tied with Wendy Williams (1.4, +8%)
  • Steve Harvey (1.0, -17%), tied with Steve Wilkos (1.0, -9%) and The Real (1.0, NA)
