Laugh Off, a proposed half-hour comedy game strip produced by Bunim-Murray, is available for fall on a cash-barter basis from October Moon Television.
The series, designed to fill stations’ need for half-hour comedies in early fringe and prime access, features two unknown comedians squaring off in a variety of competitions in front of a live audience. The audience votes on which comedian wins the episode and gains the right to compete in the next episode.
The competitions vary from night to night and can include monologue, debate, mime and improvisational. Weekly winners retire temporarily after 5 episodes but return to compete in special sweeps and culminating episodes, the latter yielding a top winner for the season.
Local stations will have the opportunity to stage competitions to find contestants in their own communities, said Chuck Larsen, president of October Moon, which developed the show in response to a dearth of off-network sitcoms and first-run development. “Many stations that run comedy blocks from 4 to 8 p.m. don’t have a new sitcom to promote in the fall,” Larsen said. “Laugh Off works well in a comedy block.”

That city is where NATPE International is holding its annual conference, beginning today. Reality producer Bunim-Murray created MTV’s Real World and other series, including Road Rules.
