‘The Resident’ Drops In Time Slot Premiere
Fox’s new medical drama The Resident premiered in its normal Monday time slot last night, losing about half of its audience from its premiere. Airing at 9 p.m., it drew a 1.0 rating in adults 18-49 and 4.7 million. That is approximately a 60% drop in the demo and just under 50% in total viewers compared to the series premiere on Sunday (2.6, 8.7 million). In fairness, the premiere received a substantial boost from the NFC championship game

NFC Championship Game Tops Primetime
The NFC championship matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and the Philadelphia Eagles easily topped Sunday’s primetime lineup. Airing on Fox, the NFC championship game drew a 24.4 rating in metered market households. That is down a little over 10% from the 27.6 drawn by the AFC championship game in 2017, which aired in primetime on CBS.

‘Big Stage’ Syndicated Shows Not Dead – Yet
The just-concluded NATPE conference underscored for me the central problem of the broadcast syndication business: the big studios’ apparent unwillingness to spend big dollars for big shows, ones that could take their place as evening news lead-ins or in prime access. While this was the second year a row that NATPE came and went without any “big stage” show emerging, that doesn’t mean none will. “The drought will not continue,” says Hearst’s Emerson Coleman.

The Middle and Modern Family premiered within a week of each other in 2009 and set the template for the next decade of ABC comedies: brightly-colored, well-written, big-hearted family sitcoms that look at the American experience from a particular demographic perspective. But after a strong run, both comedies are winding down. That will leave ABC without the identity-defining sitcoms it’s relied on for ratings for years. So what does that mean for the future of the Alphabet’s comedy brand?
