The Jennifer Hudson Show will spend the week of April 8 with the cast of ABC’s Emmy-winning comedy, Abbott Elementary. Abbott Elementary and its creator and star, Quinta Brunson, are out of legal detention. A judge in New York dismissed a lawsuit against Brunson, 34, and ABC filed by writer Christine Davis in 2021, claiming the hit sitcom was a “veritable knock-off” of her show This School Year. According to the court decision, the judge found that “no discerning observer would find the works to be substantially similar.”

The comedy series has been renewed for Season 4 at ABC, as announced by Willard R. Abbott Elementary’s own Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) during Disney’s Television Critics Association Press Tour. The renewal comes on the heels of the much-anticipated Season 3 premiere, which was delayed due to last year’s strikes.

On Feb. 1, the “Lunch Break with Abbott Elementary National Tour” will kick off in New York City, featuring a giant, street-legal Abbott Elementary-themed lunch box vehicle that will make stops in 18 states. Teachers and staff in underserved school districts will receive Abbott Elementary tin lunch boxes including sandwiches, sides and beverages sourced from local businesses in each city as well as reusable Abbott Elementary tote bags filled with school and desk supplies.

ABC is loading up Aug. 23 primetime with Abbott Elementary. Four Season 2 episodes deemed to be fan favorites by the network will air in primetime that night.

The Season 2 finale of the ABC comedy series tallied 7 million viewers after seven days of multi-platform viewing, according to Nielsen data. That marks its best audience since the Feb. 8 Valentine’s Day episode, which scored a series-high 7.4M viewers in seven days. The seven-day audience is up about 4.2M from the 2.8M people who tuned in to the episode same-day. Among the ad-friendly 18-49 demographic, the Season 2 finale of Abbott Elementary hit a 2.47 rating in MP+7, which is up 366% compared to the episode’s 0.53 same-day rating. Just like total viewers, it’s also the highest multi-platform rating for the series since the Valentine’s Day episode managed a 2.49.

Abbott Elementary will finally reveal Janine’s mother on the ABC comedy’s April 12 episode, and even it’s Empire star Taraji P. Henson, who will play Vanetta on the hit comedy series.

ABC has picked up a third season of its breakout comedy series, which is coming off a Golden Globe win for best comedy series and acting awards for Quinta Brunson (who also created the show) and Tyler James Williams. The show also won three Emmys in 2022, for Brunson’s writing, supporting actress Sheryl Lee Ralph and casting for a comedy.

Timed to the Season 1 finale of hit ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary, Warner Bros. Television is donating 150,000 meals to Feeding America. Along with the meal donations, the show’s Think Outside the (Lunch) Box campaign aims to raise awareness about food insecurity with a week-long series on social media encouraging others to support Feeding America. From April 11 to 15, Warner Bros. TV will partner with influencer chefs Eitan Bernath and Ahmad Alzahbi, who will create lunchbox meals while discussing the impacts of food insecurity.
