David Muir’s World News Tonight has been the top-rated show in all of American television for three weeks this month, averaging nearly 11 million viewers per night. Amid the devastation in New York City, Muir is still anchoring the show every night from an almost-empty ABC newsroom. He’s hosted three primetime specials on the pandemic, including one on Monday night that featured an interview with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Little by little, ABC’s World News Tonight has climbed to the rocky summit of Mount Nielsen. NBC’s Nightly News remains the most-watched evening newscast in the United States. For Madison Avenue, however, that information may provide cold comfort. For the second week in a row, ABC’s World News lured more of the viewers advertisers in news programming desire — people 25-54 — than NBC’s Nightly News. The last time ABC trumped NBC in that category in the evening news slot for two consecutive weeks came in October of last year, according to Nielsen.

ABC World News has had a good thing going the past few months, with anchor Diane Sawyer helping the newscast to its best ratings in years, including a winning streak among adults 25-54. It looks like David Muir, the new anchor who took over for Sawyer on Sept. 1, could be capable of keeping that good thing going. In his first week, the week ended Sept. 7, Muir helped the newscast to its fifth straight weekly win among the key news demo, giving ABC its longest winning streak since October 2007.
