AMC Networks U.S. Ad Revenue Drops 23%, Streaming Subs Rise To 11.4M
The company, led by CEO Kristin Dolan, takes a $42.4 million impairment charge related to BBC America and a $19.8 million charge related to 25/7 Media.
AMC Networks said it will hold its upfront event in person on April 11 at Chelsea Factory in New York. In the spotlight will be programming, including its Anne Rice Immortal Universe; its WEtv reality franchise; crime drama Dark Winds; and The Walking Dead Universe. The event will also feature interactive experiences, talent integrations and ad tech advancements, including addressable ads and programmatic buying. AMC Networks reported double-digit declines in advertising and affiliate revenue in the third quarter, which dragged down its overall results. The cable and streaming programmer posted adjusted earnings per share of $1.85, which was down from $2.09 a year ago but still ahead of Wall Street analysts’ consensus estimate. Revenue, though, did not clear the Street’s bar, falling nearly 7% to $637 million.
AMC Networks has enabled advertisers to buy live linear inventory programmatically on three of its networks — an industry first, according to the media company. Starting this month, programmatic buying is fully operational on AMC, WE TV and BBC America. The company worked with FreeWheel, The Trade Desk and Canoe Ventures to implement the technology.
AMC Networks said it has begun rolling out an ad-supported version of its AMC Plus streaming service with a price tag of $4.99 a month. The original ad-free version of AMC Plus costs $8.99. Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service will be adding a number of series from AMC Networks for two months starting Sept. 1. The shows will pop up on as AMC Plus PIcks on Max and will be available to subscribers to both the ad-free and ad-light tiers of Mxs in the United States.
