Syndicators and stations got some answers to the many questions hanging over them for next season lineups. CBS Television Distribution’s Jeff Probst (left) was picked up by the NBC Owned Television Stations. Twentieth Television’s Ricki with Ricki Lake was grabbed by Tribune Broadcasting in New York and seven other markets while Warner Bros.’s Anderson with Anderson Cooper secured key second-season renewals. Anderson Cooper is becoming practically ubiquitous. The CNN primetime host and 60 Minutes correspondent is readying his new Warner Bros. syndicated daytime talk show for a Sept. 12 launch. He talks about his goals for the new show and his need to mono-task as his schedule fills up.

CNN said today that it will move Anderson Cooper’s AC360 into the 8 p.m. time slot instead of the cancelled In the Arena with Eliot Spitzer. Beginning Aug. 8, CNN will broadcast AC360 live at 8 p.m. and re-air it in its current timeslot of 10 p.m.

In a conversation before a crowd of designers, programmers, and advertisers at the PromaxBDA conference in Manhattan, Anderson Cooper said that Anderson, his new Warner Bros.-distributed daytime talk show, will “cover a broad spectrum of topics,” though, he adds, “I don’t think we’ll be doing a lot of politics.... There are so many places where viewers can get that.”

With the opening today of PromaxBDA’s first Station Summit, both sides of the syndication coin will be looking for ways to improve the symbiotic relationship that builds viewers for stations and revenue for syndicators. And with the improving economy, the outlook is brighter than it has been in years.

It may be impossible for even a Katie Couric and Anderson Cooper to duplicate Winfrey’s success as the audience shrinks in a new media age. It could be years before any of the claimants emerge as Winfrey’s rightful heir — if at all.
