CNN is considering hiring a comedian to host one of its prime time shows. The “news entertainment” personality could fill the 9 to 11 p.m. hours with a nontraditional version of the news, five people familiar with the planning said. CNN executives have floated names including Bill Maher, Trevor Noah, Arsenio Hall and Jon Stewart, and have looked at other comedic news-focused talk shows for inspiration.

With the competition on ABC, CBS and NBC all skewing 50-plus, CBS Television Distribution is betting 35-54 viewers remembers Arsenio Hall and will welcome him back to latenight. If Arsenio siphons off African-American viewers for his broadcast competitors, it will most likely be at the expense of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live. Kimmel’s adult 18-49 rating was a 0.8 among African Americans compared to 0.5 among all adults 18-49.

CBS Television Distribution released the first promo for the new Arsenio Hall Show in anticipation of its fall 2013 syndication launch. The trailer-length promo pays homage to horror movies and will begin airing on all Arsenio Hall Show affiliate stations. The new latenight talk show has been sold in 95% of the markets across the country.
