The Scripps Howard Awards celebrate excellence in journalism during 2016 in 17 categories, with prize money totaling $180,000. The winning journalists and news outlets demonstrated courage, resourcefulness and ingenuity.
America’s Public Television Stations recognized several public broadcasting leaders with awards Wednesday and honored two members of Congress for their advocacy on behalf of the system. Senators Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) each received the Champion of Public Broadcasting award, which recognizes political leaders and others who protect the ability of local public TV stations to provide education, public safety and civic leadership services.
On Monday evening in New York, $280,000 was raised to help broadcasters in need in honor of Paul Karpowicz, Meredith Broadcasting Group president and recipient of the Broadcasters Foundation of America 2017 Golden Mike Award. The foundation also presented its 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award to Bill Hoffman, retired president of Cox Media Group. The national journalism competition was established in 1953 and recognizes outstanding journalism across multiple platforms. This year, there are 15 journalism categories with total cash prizes of $180,000. All entries are due by Feb. 10. The Scripps Howard Foundation will honor and celebrate award recipients in Cincinnati on April 12. The Scripps Howard Foundation will announce the winners in a Twitter campaign on March 7. Among those honored at Wednesday’s ceremony in Miami Beach were AMC Networks’ Josh Sapan, YouTube’s Susanne Daniels, Univision’s Randy Falco, multihyphenate Eva Longoria and Fox’s Gary Newman and Dana Walden.
The three new trophies make Ellen DeGeneres the winningest entertainer in the show’s history.
WVIT Wins DuPont Award For Investigations
Four 2017 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards go to local television news investigations: KXAN in Austin, Texas, for documenting racial profiling, WVIT in West Hartford, Conn., for uncovering widespread faulty home construction, Indianapolis’ WTHRfor exposing a corrupt charity, and Atlanta’s WXIA for spotlighting problems with the 911 emergency system.
The 2017 SAG Award nominees were announced Wednesday, and Netflix dominated in TV the television category with 17.
The 74th annual Golden Globe Awards nominations ceremony were announced morning. On the TV side, FX’s newcomer Atlanta as well as ABC’s black-ish, HBO’s Veep and Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent. are up for best comedy. Best drama nominations include HBO’s Game of Thrones and Westworld, Netflix’s The Crown and Stranger Things, and NBC’s freshman series This Is Us.
On the TV side, Game of Thrones took Best Drama Series. The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story swept up, as expected, taking Best Limited Series and acting prizes for Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown and Courtney B. Vance. Best Comedy Series went to HBO’s Silicon Valley.
