The blackout fight between cable giant Charter Communications and Disney is over. Hours ahead of Monday Night Football, which airs on Disney’s ESPN, the companies reached a deal that would allow millions of Charter cable customers to watch the game, CNBC’s David Faber reported Monday, citing sources. Charter and Disney’s stocks, as well as media peers including Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global traded higher on Monday morning. Representatives for Disney and Charter didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Cord-Cutting To Hit 8.1% In 2023: Analyst

After another quarter of pay TV subscribers dropping their subscriptions, Wells Fargo analyst Steven Cahall forecasts that cord-cutting will hit 8.1% for the full year. Cahall said pay TV would lose 8.1% of its subscribers in 2024 and 2025. Cord-cutting was 6.2% in 2022. The continued erosion of the pay TV universe will increase pressure on the stock prices of companies in the media and broadcast business.

Top Pay-TV, Cable Providers Lost 1.73 Million Subscribers In Q2

Pay-TV and cable providers continued to bleed subscribers during the second quarter of 2023 as cord-cutting among consumers continued to accelerate. The largest pay-TV providers in the U.S. – who represent about 96% of the market – lost about 1.73 million net subscribers in the second quarter of 2023, compared to a pro forma net loss of about 1.725 million during the same period a year ago, according to Leichtman Research Group.
