ESPN Suspends DraftKings TV Ad Segments

ESPN has suspended its branded news segments featuring sports fantasy site DraftKings. The fantasy sports company has suspended virtually all TV advertising on the network. All this was in response to a DraftKings and FanDuel “insider trading” scandal that was revealed in a New York Times story on Tuesday. That story said a DraftKings employee used inside information to play on the competitor’s FanDuel site, winning $350,000.

It’s starting to feel inevitable that Lionsgate and the Starz premium cable channels will merge operations, brought together by the command bond of investor John Malone. But how quickly the companies will tie the knot is still the subject of much speculation. The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that the two entities were in advanced merger talks. That was downplayed by insiders at both companies and a senior Lionsgate investor, all of whom acknowledge that the concept of merging has been discussed in abstract but disputed that talks to unite the companies are under way.

Altice In Deal To Buy Cablevision For $17.7B

France’s Altice has set a rich cash acquisition agreement for Cablevision that promises to make the European telecom conglomorate a player in the U.S. television business. Altice said early Thursday that would pay $34.90 a share in cash for Cablevision, valuing the deal at $17.7 billion including existing Cablevision debt. In May, Altice bought a majority stake in another U.S. operator, Suddenlink.
