GoPro, which makes action sports cameras, is going public. Wednesday evening, the company announced it would offer 17.8 million shares at $21 to $24 apiece. At the high end, that means GoPro could be worth as much as $3 billion. Investors will buy the stock based on GoPro’s potential. So what are they buying?
The GY-HM890, introduced earlier this month, features a built-in streaming engine that allows cellular-based live HD transmission directly from the camera. Deliveries of the new GY-HM890s are expected to begin next month, with several cameras slated for WOAI and KABB San Antonio, Texas, and WJAC Johnstown, Pa. The purchase is the first phase of the company’s planned standardization on the camera across its ENG operations.
They include two new VariCam cameras — the VariCam 35 and VariCam HS — that feature a modular design and employ Panasonic’s AVC-ULTRA family of advanced codecs; a new generation of P2 solid-state recording media; the company’s first P2 HD handheld camcorder with AVC-ULTRA recording; and the AV-HS6000, a cost-effective 2 M/E switcher.
The PXW-Z100 Ultra HD handheld will be available toward the end of the year.
DSLRs Go From Curiosities To Pro Tools
Digital single lens reflex cameras began as a way for wire service photogs to shoot video with the same camera they were using for still photos. Then TV stations began to use the small, lightweight and inexpensive units to produce on-air promos. Now, manufacturers including Canon, Blackmagic Design and Red are making DSLRs that are truly professional video cameras with bells and whistles that shooters love. KNSD’s Erik Naso (pictured) shoots with a Canon C100 and says he loves its depth of field: “It’s a film look to the extreme.”
Canon is making another run at selling camcorders to TV stations for ENG, introducing two new units at NAB. Rivals in the market: Panasonic’s AG-HPX and AJ-PX lines; JVC’s GY-HN650 with dual-codec live streaming; and Sony’s new PMW-450 and its PMW-200.
