Panelists at CCW 2015 say that for broadcasters to make the most of OTT, which will be a necessity for survival, they must have compelling content that will garner viewers so they can sell that aggregated reach to advertisers.
Brandon Berger, Ogilvy & Mather’s worldwide chief digital officer, says broadcasters need to adopt new strategies that work in a world where half of consumers say they can’t find anything to watch on linear TV; their average attention span is down to eight seconds; and the world’s 7.3 billion inhabitants have more mobile phone subscriptions (7.6 billion) than toothbrushes (4.2 billion). The key, he says, is compelling storytelling, which is still the backbone of television.
A new study says implementing the ATSC 3.0 next-gen standard could result in $12 billion to $20 billion in additional annual revenue to broadcasters.
With the proliferation of outlets, which now includes OTT services like Netflix, not being affiliated with a television network is no longer a curse for independent studios like Steve Mosko’s Sony Pictures Television.
The new name is designed to reflect the trade show’s expanded focus while incorporating the strength of the NAB Show brand, the association says.
