Since his CNBC debut in late September, The News With Shepard Smith has averaged a modest 280,000 viewers each weeknight at 7 p.m. That’s twice as many viewers as the Shark Tank reruns it replaced — but a fraction of the 2 million-plus viewers that CNN, Fox and MSNBC each attract at the same hour.

But, as was clear to anyone watching Tuesday night, the breakout of the evening was political correspondent Steve Kornacki, master of the interactive touchscreen map that has become a staple of TV news political coverage.
Political junkies aren’t the only ones who will have more TV programming than they can possibly watch on Election Night. Two of the better-known business-news outlets, CNBC and Fox Business Networkv. plan to keep coverage going well after the market closes Tuesday, the better to explain to viewers the financial ramifications for the 2020 presidential election.
Smith’s new 7 p.m. program, The News With Shepard Smith, won an average of 373,000 viewers in its debut Wednesday night on CNBC, according to data from Nielsen, and an average of 56,000 viewers in the demographic prized by advertisers in news programming, people between 25 and 54. Those numbers are well below the crowd size he generated for Fox News Channel in the mid-afternoon, when he attracted an average of 1.3 million and a demo audience of 195,000, according to ratings data. Smith left that network in 2019 after clashing with primetime host Tucker Carlson.

CNBC has signed former Fox News journalist Shepard Smith to anchor a new one-hour evening news program, the network said Wednesday. The News with Shepard Smith will debut this fall in the 7-8 p.m. time slot on the cable news business channel. The Monday through Friday newscast marks a significant shift in the evening programming strategy for CNBC, which currently relies on light, unscripted fare. CNBC Chairman Mark Hoffman said Smith’s show will try to be a counter to news and commentary programming.
Two anchors of CNBC’s “Squawk Box” had a fiery exchange on Wednesday morning sparked in part by the grim milestone that the nation has surpassed 100,000 deaths due to the coronavirus outbreak. Andrew Ross Sorkin and Joe Kernen shouted at each other for about a minute in the first hour of the 7-9 a.m. show that is the anchor of CNBC’s daytime lineup. Kernen accused Sorkin of “panicking” about the COVID-19 threat and related issues. Sorkin in response accused Kernen of working to “help” President Donald Trump. The two were live from different locations because of social distancing measures.
NBCUniversal is making MSNBC and CNBC available to all video customers throughout the coronavirus crisis, similar to an announcement from Fox earlier this week, though NBCU’s viewers must authenticate by providing a pay TV password. NBCU Owned Stations, including Telemundo stations, will also be streaming their local newscasts and coronavirus-related press conferences, and NBC News NOW will be showing more content from MSNBC, CNBC and NBC News.
