Three executives at Disney General Entertainment (DGE) have received expanded leadership roles. The changes include the promotions of Erwich to president, ABC Entertainment, Hulu & Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals; Ryan to president, Marketing, Disney General Entertainment; and Schrier to the role of president, Disney Television Studios & Business Operations, Disney General Entertainment.
While ABC programming is available on Hulu, Craig Erwich knows his broadcast network and Disney’s ad-supported streaming platform have two different audiences. The executive, who added the network to his purview last year, also opens up about how Hulu and ABC complement one another, drawing top talent to broadcast and why Rebel, the first original series from Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff, was canceled after airing only five episodes.
Hulu SVP of Content Craig Erwich says that “The Handmaid’s Tale’s” eight Emmys mark a validation of the streamer’s original content path. He says Hulu has been moving towards shows “that have a really large canvas for storytelling, that are provocative, that hopefully provide a conduit and fodder for conversation, and that feel like events.”
Hulu is making a statement in the original content arena with the hire of seasoned TV development executive Craig Erwich. Erwich, who recently exited his post as president of Warner Horizon, has been tapped as SVP and head of content for Hulu to lead the content and programming strategy for Hulu and Hulu Plus.
