DGA Email Scandal: Members Urged Not To Elect 10 Writers To Board

In a leaked email that has been shared widely in the creative community, Linda Montanti, chair of the guild’s Western AD/UPM Council, urged a bloc of DGA voters to not support the board candidacies of a number of multihyphenates who are members of both the DGA and WGA — some of whom have been outspoken about strike issues. The list includes writer-producer Boots Riley, Oscar-winning CODA writer-director Sian Heder, actor-filmmaker Justine Bateman, actor-writer Paul Scheer and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin. The unorthodox move prompted DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter to contact the members affected to assure them that Montanti’s move was not condoned by top DGA leaders.

DGA National Board Unanimously Approves Tentative Contract Agreement With AMPTP

The Directors Guild of America’s national board of directors has unanimously approved the tentative agreement reached by the guild’s negotiating committee late Saturday, a deal that aims to set parameters around the use of artificial intelligence and boost streaming residual rates. With the board’s approval, the contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers will be sent to a ratification vote by DGA membership. The guild expects to send materials to its members this week.

Glatter Elected President Of Directors Guild of America

Lesli Linka Glatter, a veteran TV director of shows such as “Homeland” and “Mad Men,” was elected president of the Directors Guild of America on Saturday night.

DGA Leaders Approve New Film-TV Contract

Leaders of the Directors Guild of America have approved a three-year successor deal to the DGA master contract, triggering a ratification vote by the 18,000 members. The DGA national board announced Saturday that it had approved the deal unanimously. The guild revealed that the agreement includes a significant increase in residuals for high-budget streaming content, pension, wages and TV creative rights.

DGA And AMPTP Start Contract Negotiations

The Directors Guild and management’s AMPTP will begin negotiations for a new TV and film contract on Feb. 10, making the DGA the first guild — as it has been in the last two bargaining cycles — to sit down with the companies, and thus setting the pattern of bargaining in which the AMPTP will expect the WGA and SAG-AFTRA to follow.

A bill introduced in Congress Thursday that would give Donald Trump and all future presidents the authority to appoint the head of the U.S. Copyright Office has received the endorsement of the Directors Guild of America and Motion Picture Association of America as well as the NAB, whose CEO Gordon Smith said: “As representatives of both significant owners and users of copyrighted material, NAB supports passage of this bill and will continue to work with lawmakers on broader efforts to modernize the copyright office.”
