On Midterm TV, Data Came Fast
The midterm election coverage began with intimations that the Democrats might unleash a “blue wave.” It proceeded, in early evening, with James Carville soberly declaring on MSNBC, “It’s not going to be a wave election.” It ended, after a re-reversal of the narrative, with cable news panels arguing over what the definition of “wave” is.
ABC News says that it is treating midterm election night coverage as if it were a presidential year, promising Wednesday to get a one-hour jump on its broadcast rivals by devoting the entire primetime schedule on Nov. 6 to reporting results.

Breaking from two decades of tradition, this year’s election exit poll is set to include surveys of voters in 31 states, not all 50 as it has for the past five presidential elections, according to multiple people involved in the planning.
The portrayals of the candidates in the news has never been more negative, finds a recent study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. Likely reasons for this is that while newsrooms are shrinking (and along with them, independent reporting), the mud-slinging campaigns themselves are making up a growing source of the narrative that’s presented in the press.
NBC News is partnering with TV One, the network aimed at adult African-American viewers, to provide them coverage of the 2012 election. Their coverage will include the final night of the Republication National Convention and the Democratic National Convention, as well as election night.
The group will combine the resources of its Columbus, Ohio, and Indianapolis stations, newspaper and websites to provide a range of programming on the political conventions, national and local issues, free airtime for candidates and election night coverage.
The association says the report which said cable was the top regular source of election news should win the “Fuzzy Math Prize of the Year.”
As part of “Democracy 2012,” the Scripps stations in all 13 of the company’s television markets will provide a minimum of five minutes of free airtime to candidates nightly between 5 and 11:35 p.m. in the 30 days preceding primary and general elections as well. This year the stations are also adding multiplatform coverage.
Newsweek and The Daily Beast will begin featuring 2012 presidential campaign coverage from NBC News beginning this month.
The group’s stations will air a minimum of 12 minutes of political news daily for 150 hours total in the month prior to the primary and general elections. It also launches an election app, a new Commitment 2012 Investigates series and is partnering with PolitiFact.
Elections Top 2010’s List Of News Stories
Last week’s culmination of the hotly contested 2010 midterm election season proved to be the biggest story in two years, filling 57% of the newshole from November 1-7, according to the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism.
