Broadcast networks filed suit on Thursday to halt a company from offering streams of their signals in the Washington, D.C. market, in the latest effort to challenge the legality of a bevy of services seeking to provide over-the-air TV on the Internet. Fox, NBC, ABC and Allbritton Communications filed a claim in U.S. District Court in Washington against Aereokiller, the provocatively named company founded by FilmOn’s Alki David.
Hulu’s three TV-focused owners — ABC, Fox and NBC — are taking more control of the streaming-video site’s ad sales, another sign of the tension that sometimes flashes between the popular video hub and the media conglomerates that control it.

Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly kicked off Fox’s upfront presentation to advertisers by conceding his network’s troubles this year — and vowing to return to No. 1 in the key demo next season. “Part of an upfront is being upfront,” he said, admitting: “This was not our best year.”

None of the four judges on the singing competition will be asked to return next season, an individual with knowledge of Fox’s plans says. Longtime producer Nigel Lythgoe is expected to get the boot. And despite reports to the contrary, Fox isn’t even considering bringing former judge Jennifer Lopez back as a lifesaver for next season.
Nets Poised To Place Fall Programming Bets
With Big Five upfront presentations set for May 13, 14, 15 and 16, the networks are looking to fill a lot of slots in hopes of finding significantly more keepers than last season.
The veteran series, currently finishing an abbreviated 25th season, will get a new home on cable.
Fox’s Original Idea: No More Reruns
The network is committing itself to scheduling more original programming — all year, but especially in the summer — to counter the effects of cable and DVRs. The strategy includes “event series” like those that have performed well on cable. Among the event series in development is a remake of Shogun, an NBC miniseries that aired over five days in 1980.
Fox Sets First ‘FanFront’ Event
Immediately after the network presents its 2013-14 fare to Madison Avenue advertisers, stars from its new and returning shows will mingle with fans during the event.
The group says the April 14 episode violated the broadcast decency law and calls on its members to file formal FCC complaints. “Every Fox affiliate that aired this American Dad episode should be held accountable for violating the law,” says the group’s president, Tim Winter.

Fox: If Aereo Wins, Net Could Go Cable
News Corp. COO Chase Carey tells an NAB Show audience that, while it will continue with legal action to stop Aereo and other streaming services from distributing its broadcast signals without permission or compensation, it’s prepared to take its broadcast network off the air and convert it into a pay channel, “which we would do in collaboration with both our content partners and affiliates.”
