N.J. Sen. Frank Lautenberg Dies At 89

Lautenberg was elected to the Senate in 1982 and was re-elected in 1988 and 1994. He took a break from the Senate and was elected to a fourth term in 2002, followed by re-election to his fifth term in 2008. As an outspoken member of the commerce committee, he often defended the FCC’s ban on cross-media ownership and was a longtime supporter of public broadcasting.
