Premium cable rivals HBO and Showtime battled for supremacy throughout Sunday night’s telecast. In the end, HBO pulled out a 5-4 victory. The biggest losers? Commercial broadcast networks ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox — none of which aired those shows. One award for PBS saved broadcast television from a complete shutout.
Five out of six best drama series slots were claimed by cable shows, both premium and basic, with the sixth going to PBS. Broadcast networks, which had controlled the comedy genre last year, lost fully half of that turf to Girls, Veep and Curb Your Enthusiasm, all HBO.
