The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is once again facing accusations of corruption and possible violations of the tax-exempt organization. At the center of the new report is an antitrust lawsuit filed by Norwegian journalist and HFPA member Kjersti Flaa, who accused the organization of allowing a “culture of corruption” and claimed “the tax-exempt organization operated as a kind of cartel, barring qualified applicants — including herself — and monopolizing all-important press access while improperly subsidizing its members’ income.”

Nominations will be announced virtually at 8:35 a.m. ET today by presenters Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson. They will reveal 12 categories on NBC’s Today show, with full nominees announced live on E! digital channels and the Golden Globes’ website. Without any in-person screenings or photo ops with stars, little is known about how the roughly 90 member press association — a notoriously unpredictable group, in normal times — is swaying this year. But one thing may be a lock: Netflix will land a whole lot of nominations.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the annual award show, said films that are first released on television or a streaming service will be eligible for January’s Globes. Usually, the Globes mandate that a film play for a week in a Los Angeles theater or on pay-per-view, as well as have an official screening for its voting members.

The growth in streaming platforms, including Apple and Disney Plus, is a dominant media story. But while streamers performed well at the Globes with Netflix’s The Crown and Amazon’s Fleabag (starring creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, above) they didn’t shut out cable contenders including FX’s Fosse/Verdon and HBO’s Succession.

The shutout, believed to be for the first time, of the broadcast networks — ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, The CW and PBS — made for a seemingly awkward situation for NBC, which will host the awards ceremony Jan. 5 and covered the nominations live on Today. It was a crowining moment for Netflix, which got 17 TV nods, to go with its 17 on the movie side.

Stand-up comedian, award-winning talk show host and humanitarian Ellen DeGeneres is set to be honored with the second Carol Burnett Award at the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards which will take place on January 5, 2020. The Carol Burnett Award is presented to someone who has made outstanding contributions to the television medium on and/or off the screen.

The Golden Globe Awards will keep their spot as the first big awards show of the 2020 season. NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Friday that the Golden Globes will air Jan. 5, 2020. As they have the past two years, the awards will air the first Sunday in January.

The Netflix comedy The Kominsky Method and FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story were double winners in the television category. But the award for The Americans was a sentimental favorite. The taut FX drama about two Russian spies leading an undercover life as an American couple was relatively unappreciated when awards were handed out each year. But it had a strong exit creatively, with the series finale in May called “elegant, potent and unforgettable” by The New Yorker.

The show, which will be featured on Snapchat Discover during the Golden Globes, will offer regular updates as awards are handed out.

FX is closing its chapter as a 21st Century Fox network on a high note, edging awards juggernauts HBO and Netflix to top the list of networks with most Golden Globes nominations, 10. It was a very tight race, reflecting the increased competition, with HBO and Amazon’s Prime Video tied for second with 9 noms apiece and Netflix right behind in fourth with 8, followed by Showtime with 6.
