Today and ABC’s Good Morning America are locked in a neck-and-neck race for dominance among the eggs-and-O.J. crowd, and their split has been stratified for months. For more than three years, GMA has typically commanded more viewers overall, while Today consistently dominated people between 25 and 54. Yet for the past two weeks, the dynamic has gone topsy-turvy: GMA has won more viewers in that all-important category, while still maintaining its overall audience lead.
The network said the early-afternoon program called Strahan & Sara would now be titled GMA3: Strahan, Sara & Keke, and feature a third host, Keke Palmer, in addition to the original team of Michael Strahan and Sara Haines.

The third hour of Good Morning America has received a new name, a new look and an even stronger focus on its hosts: Michael Strahan and Sara Haines.
After ceding its status as the most-watched morning show in the U.S. to NBC’s Today for the past seven weeks, ABC’s Good Morning America bounced back, winning the most viewers overall for the five days ending Jan. 19. Today continued its dominance, however, in the more important category, winning viewers between 25 and 54, the demographic coveted most by advertisers.
For the second consecutive week, the first two hours of the NBC morning program surged ahead of the show’s main rival, Good Morning America — not only capturing its usual lead among people 25-54, the demographic most coveted by advertisers — but among overall audiences as well. It’s the first time the venerable A.M. show has done so since late 2016, when it beat GMA among total viewers for the weeks of Dec. 12 and Dec. 19, 2016.
The Nielsen company said Today had more viewers than Good Morning America all five days last week — the first time that has happened in nearly a year.

NBC News’ Today finished first among broadcast morning shows in total viewers and demos in December, celebrating its first non-Olympics monthly win in more than four years. As the programs all talked up their stats for the final quarter of 2016, Today topped the pack in the news demo, with 1.79 million viewers aged 25-54, besting ABC’s Good Morning America (1.53M) and CBS This Morning (1.12M).
It took 16 years for ABC’s Good Morning America to end the historic streak by NBC’s Today as the most-watched program in morning television in 2012. But the race has tightened considerably over the last year. GMA is still the most popular show overall in the 2016-17 TV season, but NBC has topped GMA twice in overall viewers in the last five weeks and CBS This Morning is up 6% this season.
NBC is taking back more ground in the scorched-earth morning-news battle between its Today and ABC’s Good Morning America. Today wooed more viewers overall than its rival, as well as in the audience most coveted by advertisers, for the week ended Nov. 28, the second time it has done so in the last two weeks.
ABC News’ Good Morning America and World News Tonight both won November sweeps for the first time in 21 years. World News Tonight averaged 8.6 million viewers to edge NBC Nightly News by only 96,000, giving the show its first November sweep win since November 2001 when Peter Jennings sat in the chair currently occupied by David Muir.

News that Strahan would leave on May 13 came from a Live with Kelly & Michael spokesperson on Tuesday just hours after Ripa returned to the syndicated talk show after taking time off to “gather (her) thoughts” in response to learning last week that Strahan would be leaving for full-time duties on Good Morning America.
Kelly Ripa, star of ABC’s syndicated morning chat show Live with Kelly and Michael, is due to return to the program Tuesday after sitting out most of last week. She was said to be upset that she was kept out of the loop for the network’s plan to switch co-host Michael Strahan to Good Morning America later this year. On Friday, staffers received an email from Ripa saying that she would come back to work on Tuesday. In the meantime, she got apologies from Strahan and ABC boss Ben Sherwood, among others, for how the GMA affair was handled and for not telling her sooner.

The syndicated Live With Kelly And Michael is losing Michael Strahan to a fulltime slot on ABC’s Good Morning America starting in September. Strahan has worked a couple of days a week at GMA for the past two years, but he always has to leave midway through to head to the Live studio on Manhattan’s upper West Side. He’s joining the show’s regular cast of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Lara Logan, Amy Robach and Ginger Zee.
NBC’s Today claimed Thursday that it trumped the Walt Disney network’s Good Morning America in total viewers for the first time in a non-Olympics week since 2012, the latest twist in the scorched-earth battle between the two networks to dominate the morning-news audience and lock in millions in extra advertising dollars.
ABC’s Good Morning America had the most viewers last week. The program has won the count for 16 weeks in a row this season, and it ranks first for the fourth season in a row. NBC’s Today was first in the 25-to-54 age group, which is most important to news advertisers. But CBS This Morning, which ranks third, was up 8% from the comparable week last year while ABC was off 10% and NBC was down 6%.
Television’s top morning show is in its first prolonged slump since overtaking NBC’s Today in popularity three years ago. Good Morning America is losing viewers, most rapidly among a younger demographic that advertisers eagerly seek, where NBC has wrested back the lead from its rival. The search is on for those missing viewers, many of whom ABC executives suspect have turned off morning television altogether, and for ways to lure them back.
