ABC’s Good Morning America was born in 1975 — as so many television shows are — out of desperation. NBC had invented morning TV with the Today show two decades earlier. It had no true competition. The morning news on CBS was forgettable at best, unwatchable at worst. And ABC had nothing. In fact, some ABC-affiliated stations were talking about switching to NBC or CBS if the network could not provide a credible 7 a.m. show to start the broadcast day.
In the photo on Instragram Tuesday, Good Morning America co-anchor Lara Spencer has one arm around Trump’s shoulder and the other across his midsection. The photo triggered comments that ranged from support for Spencer and Trump to attacks on her professionalism.
Both morning shows are down in viewership this season, but the ABC franchise is down far more, as the pecking order realigns and NBC courts Access Hollywood‘s Billy Bush for the 9 a.m. host job.

It’s hardly a shock that ABC’s Good Morning America wore the morning-show ratings crown for the first week of the television season, but its margin of victory over runner-up Today on NBC was rather surprising. Racking up its highest-rated frame since mid-spring, GMA bested Today by its largest margins for any week in more than 20 years (since May 1994). The fiercest competition in television these days is the battle for a.m. supremacy between ABC and NBC. Two of TV’s most durable programs slug it out daily over a razor-thin margin of victory as they try anything and everything to woo viewers in the lucrative morning news race, where keeping the top spot seems less guaranteed than in years past. There are booking wars, digital innovations and, of late, a flurry of anchor shuffles. With the pace of change on both programs accelerating, the result is a Coke vs. Pepsi-like battle for hearts and minds that won’t reach the last drop any time soon.

Good Morning America co-anchor George Stephanopoulos is frustrated with GMA staff changes as he begins to negotiate his contract with ABC. Multiple sources say Stephanopoulos, the last man standing at the morning show after Sam Champion and Josh Elliott departed in recent weeks, is concerned about the softer direction of GMA — and the addition of yet more entertainment personalities.
Good Morning America, which now airs weekdays at 7-9 a.m., wants to add an hour to compete more effectively with its morning NBC rival. Today goes for four hours, 7-11 a.m., the final hour being Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb’s wine-filled, peppy chatfest. A source says the permanent addition of Live with Kelly and Michael co-host Michael Strahan to GMA is a minor move in the potentially seismic plan to reconfigure the network’s morning schedule. Sources say the long-term plan would involve moving back Kelly Ripa’s show to slot held by The View, which is losing Barbara Walters.
A person with knowledge of the negotiations who requested anonymity because the deal hasn’t been completed said Tuesday that Strahan will work semi-regularly during the ABC morning show’s first hour. Strahan continues as host of the syndicated daytime talker Live with Kelly and Michael.
News anchor Josh Elliott told the network on Sunday that he’s leaving for a job at NBC Sports. ABC News President Ben Sherwood moved quickly to replace him, appointing Amy Robach as the Good Morning America news anchor.

ABC’s Good Morning America continues its winning way in the a.m. through the first 11 weeks of the season. Season-to-date, ABC’s morning show has been averaging a Nielsen 5.7 million viewers and 2.14 million 25-54 viewers, higher than NBC’s Today, at 5.0 million and 2.07 million 25-54 viewers. CBS This Morning is farther back — at 3.05 million viewers and 1.03 million 25-54 viewers.
After celebrating its big program ratings win in the last several months over longtime market leader NBC’s Today, ABC’s Good Morning America now touts another honor — one more important to national TV advertisers. GMA has won its first win in commercial ratings (C3) for the 2012-13 broadcast season (Sept. 24, 2012, to Sept. 22, 2013) — the viewership measure that virtually all national TV advertisers use to ink their media deals.
As anticipated, ABC News will officially announce today that Good Morning America has won the morning infotainment war for a full TV season, marking its first victory since 1992-93 in the news demographic, and first time since 1993-94, in terms of total viewers.
In September of 1994, ABC’s morning show was led by Charlie Gibson, Joan Lunden and Spencer Christian. All three have since been replaced by Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Josh Elliott, Sam Champion and Lara Spencer.
The partnership will bring ABC News and entertainment programming to Clear Channel’s new iHeartRadio Talk feature. The deal includes content from ABC News, Nightline, 20/20, This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live and The View.
