Gotham, the Batman prequel, now officially has a fourth-season renewal. The pickup assures that a DC and a Marvel drama (newly picked up The Gifted) will air alongside each other on Fox next season. Also renewed for a fourth season is Fox’s comedy series The Last Man on Earth, The single-camera show had been on shaky ground as it has become more narrow in appeal with time but was expected to come back.
Fox has renewed Gotham for a third season, the network announced Wednesday. The Batman prequel series, currently in its second season, will also add actor Paul Reubens for a guest arc beginning March 21.
Among a burgeoning slate of programs concerned with superheroes, Madison Avenue expects CBS’s Supergirl and Fox’s Gotham to duke it out Monday nights this fall for the audience most coveted by advertisers: young people who don’t skip past the commercials.
Gotham star Jada Pinkett Smith has said that she won’t be returning to the hit Fox show for Season 2. The actress appeared on Live With Kelly and Michael on Friday morning and when asked if she would be back for the previously-announced second season said, “I don’t think so, no. I signed for a year and the year is up.”
There is no doubt where Fox stands on the new show Empire. After just two episodes, the new drama has been given a second-season pickup, a sign of what high hopes the network has for the program. The network also renewed two other shows over the weekend, second-year comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine and first-year drama Gotham.
The Dark Knight continues to rise: Fox has ordered an additional six episodes of Batman prequel Gotham, bringing its first season’s episode total to 22.
In what is believed to be the first SVOD deal for a broadcast series made before its premiere, Netflix has reached an agreement with Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution for the upcoming Fox drama series Gotham. Under the pact, Netflix will become the exclusive subscription video on demand home of the Warner Bros. TV-produced Batman prequel in the U.S. as well as in each of the territories in which the streaming network operates and select other territories in which it plans to launch services.
In a rare move, the network aired the first promo for its Batman prequel Gotham starring Ben McKenzie during Monday’s season premiere of limited series 24: Live Another Day. This marks a departure for the network, which typically unspools trailers for its new fall fare during its upfront presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers, scheduled for next week.
