Public media outlets in Illinois are feeling the effects of a state budget crisis that could be heading into a third year in June. Services classified as nonessential by the state have received no state support for two years. That includes the Illinois Arts Council, which distributed $10 million in state funds to hundreds of organizations in fiscal 2015, including 18 public broadcasters.
Another state has bet against fantasy sports sites FanDuel and DraftKings and moved them into the illegal gambling column. On Wednesday, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan told state legislators that the sites are breaking the laws of the Prairie State.
CPB announced a $715,000 grant for a journalism collaboration among seven pubcasters in Illinois, led by Illinois Public Media in Urbana. Under the working title of Illinois Newsroom, the collaboration will also include WTVP-TV in Peoria, WUIS in Springfield, WSIU in Carbondale, Tri-States Public Radio in Macomb, WVIK in Rock Island and WEIU-TV in Charleston. Together, the stations will cover much of downstate Illinois, according to Maurice Bresnahan, Illinois Public Media president-CEO.
