Why WTSP Devoted 6,000 Words To A Story
In the years since people in the news industry first began talking about “convergence” and the melding of traditional print and video forms online, plenty of newspapers have created video operations. And there are examples of TV stations making big digital investments. Still, there are limits to convergence: You don’t see many local stations turning out longform narratives, for example. That’s what makes a recent year-long investigation by Noah Pransky of Tegna’s WTSP Tampa about the influence a private PR consultant wields in local politics, so unusual.
Full Measure is the first-ever program produced by the Sinclair Television Group, which owns 162 TV stations, covering 38% of the nation’s TV homes. Most stations will air it at 9:30 a.m. Sundays, or later in the morning in some markets where Sinclair owns more than one station. The program’s mission is accountability reporting and investigations. Sinclair and former CBS News reporter Sharyl Attkisson say Full Measure will come without a political agenda, although shared history makes that a pertinent question.
The Associated Press will bring data journalism to a wider range of news organizations with the help of a $400,000 grant from the Knight Foundation, the AP said today. AP will use the funds to bring on more data journalists and increase its distribution of localized data sets.
