Mississippi-based wireless carrier C Spire has officially launched its virtual MVPD service, pricing a base tier of 104 broadcast and cable networks at $65 a month. An IP service delivered over a managed network and based on a while-label platform provided by MobiTV, C Spire TV has been in beta test mode since April.

The 1,700 companies that populated last week’s NAB Show exhibition continued to experience relatively slow growth in the aggregate in 2016. But they look forward to spending resulting from the spectrum repack, ATSC 3.0 and the much discussed transition to IP.

At the Imagine Communications NAB Show press conference in Las Vegas, the company unveiled its Open Zenium initiative to further advance adoption of IP workflows and discussed how IP and the cloud can be used by broadcasters looking at how to deliver personalized, targeted content and ads in an ATSC 3.0 future.

As broadcasters’ infrastructures evolve to accommodate IP, UHD and HDR, it stands to reason that vendors will necessarily to need to support workflows that — to various extents, and for various possible durations — are in a state of flux. Evertz indicated that it was up for the challenge in a press conference on Sunday that touched on its latest developments in areas including SDN, playout, compression, remote production and more.

The bonded cellular technology at the heart of today’s IP newsgathering systems has achieved such a level of maturity that many vendors have begun addressing the finer points, such as how to more closely integrate the workflow of reporters in the field with the newsroom and maintaining network speeds even when working within the confines of a VPN. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers committee at work on a new standard for professional video over IP is nearing the stage where its work can be put to the test. Many are hopeful the SMPTE 2110 standard will deliver what’s needed for the industry to coalesce around an IP protocol that broadcasters and others in the industry can support.

The transition from baseband SDI to an open standard internet protocol is underway, aided by the Alliance for IP Media Solutions. But there’s some confusion about AIMS. Who are the standards players and what are their origins? Do they share common goals and objectives, and how do they interact?
