Jeopardy‘s all-time top money winners Brad Rutter, Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer are facing off for ultimate bragging rights. The winner gets $1 million, with $250,000 for each runner-up in the contest that airs on consecutive nights beginning 8 p.m. ET Tuesday on ABC.

In TV time, 36 seasons is unspeakably ancient, but this year game veteran Jeopardy exploded into one of TV’s most talked-about shows. The Sony Pictures Television-produced game show hit multiyear highs, led all of syndication in the ratings several times, was memed all over social media and discussed around dinner tables across the nation.

BC announced Monday that Jeopardy‘s three highest earners of all time — Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer — will face off against one another for the multi-night primetime event Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time. Premiering Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, at 8/7c, the Jeopardy! tournament will air for at least three consecutive weeknights through Thursday, Jan. 9.

Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek is hinting that his ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer could force him to step away from the popular game show, saying his chemotherapy treatments are starting to affect his speech.

Sony Pictures TV, which produces both syndicated game shows, has named Mike Richards as the new executive producer for the two series. He’ll assume the role when the 72-year-old Harry Friedman steps aside after the 2019-20 season, his 25th at Sony.

Harry Friedman, executive producer of both Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, will retire when his contract expires on May 1, 2020, Sony Pictures Television, which produces both of the veteran syndicated games, said today.

Fifteen of the most successful winners from the past two seasons of Jeopardy will convene this fall for the 2019 Tournament of Champions, the show announced via video Wednesday.

The episode scored a 10.1 household rating in overnight metered markets, the highest rating its has achieved by that measurement in 14 years (a June 2005 episode drew a 10.3).

Jeopardy Executive Producer Harry Friedman says that while he “can’t say at this point” who leaked the footage, “[w]e think we know where and who and how” it got out. And if that responsible party is in fact tracked down, the show will take “very, very, very appropriate” action.

The 27-year-old librarian from Chicago dethroned Holzhauer before he was able to beat Ken Jennings’s record.

A video clip appearing to show Jeopardy phenom James Holzhauer’s historic run come to an end made the rounds Sunday on social media. The minute-long snippet — believed to be a leaked clip from an episode expected to air on Monday — picks up as the contestants reveal their responses in the Final Jeopardy segment, and ends with the 34-year-old professional gambler in an unfamiliar position: Second place, trailing leader Emma Boettcher by $3,200.

James Holzhauer on Monday won his 28th straight Jeopardy game with an additional $130,222 in winnings, the second highest single-day sum ever recorded on the show. Holzhauer’s total earnings are now at $2,195,557. That’s $325,143 shy of Ken Jennings’ $2,520,700, which he won in 74 episodes in 2004.

James Holzhauer eclipsed the $1 million mark in winnings Tuesday on his 14th appearance. Not only has he won $131,127 to shatter the program’s previous one-day record of $77,000, he already has the top five one-day scores in the history of a game that has aired regularly since 1984.

On Tuesday, James Holzhauer won $110,914 on the syndicated game show. The previous record of $77,000 was set by Roger Craig in 2010. Tuesday’s win was the fourth consecutive victory for Holzhauer, whose winnings total more than $244,000. He will face two new challengers Wednesday.

Producers Sony Pictures Television are making the most (financially) out of Jeopardy. Netflix announced Monday that it has acquired 45 library episodes of the Alex Trebek-hosted quiz show, which will be available to stream for the first time on the service starting Tuesday. The announcement follows an August deal that Sony Pictures TV made with Hulu for 60 episodes of the syndicated game show.
