‘Kennedy Center Honors’ Broadcast Scores Wednesday Night Ratings Win For CBS
CBS’s broadcast of the 45th annual Kennedy Center Honors — which recognized George Clooney, U2, Tania León, Gladys Knight and Amy Grant — took home a Wednesday night ratings win for the network. The two-hour special averaged about 5.1 million total viewers, which was up 18% compared to last year’s audience of about 4.3 million. It was the No. 1 show of the night in terms of total viewership.
This 44th class of honorees for lifetime achievement in the creative arts is heavy on musical performers. The honorees also include Motown Records creator Berry Gordy, actress-singer Bette Midler, opera singer Justino Diaz and folk music legend Joni Mitchell. All will be honored on Dec. 5 with a trademark program that includes personalized tributes and performances that are kept secret from the honorees.
The pandemic made the ceremony, honoring Debbie Allen, Joan Baez, Garth Brooks, Midori and Dick Van Dyke and airing on CBS on Sunday, like no other.
