KHQ is getting hit hard by COVID-19. A third person at the Spokane, Wash., NBC affiliate has tested positive for the virus. Sean Owsley, who has been anchoring the show The 6:30 while in quarantine, tweeted that he was sick last Tuesday.

A “very sophisticated” cyber attack on the software running KHQ’s news broadcasts has journalists at the Cowles Spokane, Wash., NBC affiliate reading off paper scripts and resorting to technical workarounds for video. “It’s very late ’90s all of a sudden in here,” said Traci Zeravica, director of content and communications for the station.

Longtime KHQ Exec J. Birney Blair Dies At 92
The longtime president and general manager of NBC affiliate KHQ Spokane, Wash., J. Birney Blair, died in his Spokane home on Saturday. He was 92. He started working at KHQ-AM as a reporter and became the first sales manager of the TV station in 1952. He became president-GM in 1970 and held that post until his retirement in 1988.
The new newsroom chief at the Cowles-owned NBC affiliate worked for the State of Colorado for the past four years, but earlier spent five years as an EP at KUSA Denver and held news positions at stations in a number of other markets.
The Society of Professional Journalists today announced the recipients of its annual Sigma Delta Chi Awards, which recognize exceptional professional journalism produced in 2013.
