
Long Island University released the winners of the George Polk Awards in Journalism, honoring journalists in 15 categories for their reporting in 2021. Award winners span a wide range of revelatory news coverage. The broadcasting winners included Dave Biscobing of KNXV, the E.W. Scripps ABC affiliate in Phoenix, who was honored for Local Television Reporting for “Politically Charged,” a series of reports revealing that police and prosecutors testified to the existence of a street gang they invented to convince a grand jury to authorize surveillance of political protestors. Also honored were ABC News anchor David Muir, executive producer Almin Karamehmedovic and producer Esther Castillejo; A.C.Thompson of ProPublica and two collaborators, PBS Frontline and the Berkeley Investigative Reporting Program; and CNN Chief Foreign Correspondent Clarissa Ward and her crew who won for Foreign Television Reporting.

KNXV and KASW, the Scripps ABC and CW affiliates in Phoenix, have named Jose Ochoa as the stations’ creative services director. Ochoa got his start as an intern during his senior year while enrolled at Arizona State University on a Scripps scholarship.

Stations winners were KXTV Sacramento, Calif.; KNXV Phoenix; KNTV San Francisco; and KARE Minneapolis.

Scripps ABC affiliate KNXV Phoenix is expanding its social reach with an unusual partnership with Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

How is Scripps-owned ABC affiliate KNXV able to dominate the Phoenix market on Facebook by more than 2.5 million actions? It says its success is due to a focus on positive, local stories, a complete station effort to listen to what its users want, inventive use of Facebook Live and a marketing team that is digitally savvy.
They are KNXV Phoenix (Scripps), KARE Minneapolis (Tegna), KHOU Houston (Tegna), KNTV San Francisco (NBC) and WITI Milwaukee (Tribune). Also winning awards are ABC News, CBS News and PBS, plus Netflix, HBO and National Geographic Networks. The awards will be presented on Jan. 16, 2018.
Anticipating FCC authorization of the ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard on Thursday, the consortium of leading station groups is planning to set up experimental 3.0 station next spring to explore service enhancement and business opportunities. The project will also include creatng a “lighthouse” station to continue regular digital service to existing sets. Joining Pearl (Cox Media, E.W. Scripps, Graham, Hearst, Meredith, Nexstar, Raycom and Tegna) in the effort will be Fox, NBCUniversal and Univision.
Scripps-owned Phoenix ABC affiliate KNXV was the social leader for the market according to data from Share Rocket.

When asked about rumors of layoffs at the company’s Phoenix ABC affiliate, a Scripps spokesperson said the group is “restructuring some positions and eliminating others in an on-going effort to meet the needs of our Phoenix audiences. New jobs also will be created.”

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences unveiled nominations for the 35th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.Regional nominees are WTHR, WFAA, WISN, KXTX, WNBC, KING, KNXV and KXAS. PBS led networks with 43 nominations followed by CBS with 42. The awards will be presented Sept. 30 during a ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall at New York’s Lincoln Center.
Local News Peabody Winners Up Close, Pt. 1
This year’s Peabody Award winners included efforts by four stations. This week, we look at two of them: Investigating the Fire, the KMGH Denver report that showed how a controlled burn in Colorado turned deadly, and KNXV Phoenix’s Ford Escape: Exposing a Deadly Defect, which led to the recall of 700,000 SUVs.
Those four stations took home the prestigious awards presented annually by University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication for the best in electronic media. Other honorees include CBS, ABC and PBS with two awards each, while HBO was the most honored with five citations.
