Less than three years after coming to Tegna’s St. Louis NBC affiliate — and after only 14 months in the top slot — General Manager Marv Danielski is leaving the station. In an email distributed to KSDK staff Wednesday, Danielski said he would be leaving July 1.

Gannett’s St. Louis NBC affiliate has chosen KTNV Las Vegas ND Karin Movesian to succeed Mike Shipley as head of its news operations beginning later this month.

Marv Danielski has been promoted to president-GM of Gannett Broadcasting’s NBC affiliate KSDK St. Louis. He will succeed Lynn Beall, who is moving to Washington in April to become an EVP at Gannett Broadcasting.

After more than 30 years at St. Louis NBC affiliate KSDK, News Director Mike Shipley told his staff Wednesday that he will be leaving the station, sources said. They added that Shipley told newsroom employees that he would stay on until a replacement is hired and trained.

The logistics of covering the story of the riots in the aftermath of the killing of Michael Brown are difficult for St. Louis stations working 12-hour shifts and using mobile bonded cellular gear for live feeds. In addition, they are factoring in the emotionally charged nature of the story into every decision.

News crews from KSDK St. Louis and Al-Jazeera America were attacked with a bean-bag round and tear gas on Wednesday evening while reporting on a school closing in the wake of this weekend’s police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

KSDK St. Louis is the latest Gannett station to streamline its on-air news presentation, unveiling its new look today. “It’s simple, it’s clean and it’s very, very easy to read. But in the same breath … it has more information,” says Gannett Broadcasting’s Rob Mennie. Gannett says it will have made the changes at all 23 of its stations by the end of the first quarter.

St. Louis is a web of individual communities with strong identities and the most effective digital news players in the market have figured out how to weave themselves into that web, one comprising users who epitomize a humble, conservative Midwest sensibility. But it was a spring tornado that really sparked online traffic.
