What KTVU Did Right After Its Slip-Up
It was great sport all last weekend for media critics to excoriate KTVU-TV in San Francisco for its announcement of fake, offensive pilot names in the Asiana Airlines crash. There’s no denying KTVU made a big mistake. But when admitting to its mistakes, the station took an approach that other journalists should replicate.
Asiana Airlines’ Idiotic Lawsuit Threat
There’s little question that the KTVU report disparaged Asians and conveyed false information. That’s unfortunate. It doesn’t, however, give Asiana Airlines a cause of action against KTVU. To win a judgment against the television station, the airline must prove that the false report so injured its reputation that it resulted in the loss of business. That, it will never be able to do.
Asiana Airlines To Sue KTVU Over Report
Both San Francisco Fox affiliate KTVU and the National Transportation Safety Board have apologized for airing and confirming the fake racist pilot names that KTVU aired during its Friday noon broadcast. Now the airline is suing the station, claiming its reputation has been damaged by the bogus report.
